What happens to – the recycling from your green bin
Our bin crews empty thousands of recycling bins every day. They take all the recycling collected to the depot in Culham where it’s tipped out and scanned to check for any for non-recyclable items, such as black bags, food waste, nappies and textiles.
From the transfer station, the recycling goes to a ‘Material Recovery Facility’ in North London where is it’s scanned again to check for non-recyclable items.
Each load of recycling contains too many items to ensure everything is completely clear of non-recyclables, so it’s really important to make sure you don’t put any in your green bin. If there are too many non-recyclable items in a load, it may mean that the load has to be rejected.
Recycling that’s clean and made up of the correct items is separated into the different materials. These are then processed and sold on to companies in the UK and overseas to be made into new items.
